FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Two Alaskan seafood shipping companies settled a lawsuit with U.S. Customs and Border Protection for violating the Jones Act.

The companies, Kloosterboer International Forwarding LLC and Alaska Reefer Management LLC , have agreed to pay the U.S. $9.5 million for the infraction of law. CBP issued many penalties notices to the companies involved, and the companies answered with a lawsuit aimed at the federal government. The two companies challenged their penalties pleading they had “transported” the merchandise by Canadian rail.
