A boom in miracle weight loss drugs could see holiday resorts introduce 'Ozempic menus' and smaller portions for tourists, according to travel experts. Prescription medications such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, known as GLP-1's, were originally designed to treat people with type 2 diabetes by stimulating insulin secretion and delaying gastric emptying.
However, after it was discovered that the drug makes people feel fuller for longer, it became possible to acquire an 'off-label' prescription as a weight loss treatment. With projections forecasting a £78billion GLP-1 market by 2030, businesses in the travel sector that generate their revenue through food and drink sales could look to drastically alter what they offer to cater towards customer's suppressed appetites. Speaking to the MailOnline, Seda Yilmaz - director at Timeless PR and Turkey Tourism Expert - said resorts could start to offer 'Ozempic friendly' menus or wellness-centred packages in the near future. 'Many destinations already cater to guests who are mindful of portion sizes and nutritional content,' she said. 'But resorts might look at offering smaller-portioned, curated dishes or even wellness-focused dining options that align with the health-conscious preferences of these travellers. 'Luxury hotels and upscale dining venues might even see this as an opportunity to introduce specialised menus featuring smaller, nutrient-dense dishes that align with the healthy lifestyle choices of modern travellers.
