A new survey reveals a sharp increase in Scots struggling to afford housing due to high rents and mortgages, with 23% unable to move to their preferred home. Labour housing spokesman Mark Griffin calls the situation a 'devastating housing emergency,' stating that more and more Scots are being forced to live in unsuitable accommodation. The Scottish Government and multiple councils have declared a housing emergency, amidst rising homelessness levels and escalating house prices.

Scots are being “priced out” of the housing market after one in four said they cannot afford to move to their preferred home. A survey showed a sharp rise in the proportion of people unable to move to their home of choice due to high rents and mortgages.

The statistics come after the Scottish Government and at least a dozen councils declared a housing emergency. Homelessness levels are on the rise and rent and house prices are moving faster than wage rises. Humza Yousaf’s Government was blasted last year for cutting the affordable housing budget by around £200m. His successor John Swinney reversed the cut in his Government’s draft Budget last month.
