Big companies may have earned their slow-moving reputations over the years, but that doesn't mean they can't become just as growth focused as their upstart competitors. The Unicorn Within: How Companies Can Create Game-Changing Ventures at Startup Speed
, author Linda Yates gives larger companies a roadmap for capturing the growth potential of startups while leveraging the power of their enormous scale. As Yates said in a recent conversation,"Imagine if Marriott had founded Airbnb, or GM had launched Uber, or Blockbuster had created Netflix. These large companies could have founded unicorns."
Large companies have what Yates calls"the Mothership advantage." She explains,"Large companies have the ideas, talent, assets, competencies, capital, and customers to create ventures and drive growth. Seizing that Mothership advantage for your ventures can help you beat the startups at their own game. It's key, however, to recognize that while large companies have the Mothership advantage, they also have inertia, antibodies, and orthodoxies that have to be overcome.
So how can a large company seize the Mothership advantage while circumventing or avoiding inertia and antibodies? Yates recommends that, rather than trying to transform the culture,"incubate one venture, prove to yourself that you can do it. Prove to yourself that you do indeed have the talent, the ideas, and the internal mechanisms."
