Origin Energy,Suncorp Group,Office Attendance

Origin Energy and Suncorp Group have implemented policies that link office attendance to annual performance reviews and bonuses. This comes as companies try to find a balance between workplace flexibility and the need for in-person collaboration.

Employees at Origin Energy and Suncorp Group risk having their bonuses cut if they do not comply with office attendance rules.

These plans, which vary depending on an employee’s role, are included in “scorecards” that help determine an employee’s annual bonuses and account for a small percentage of their overall performance rating. In theory, this means employees could lose a small portion of their bonuses if they fail to comply with their hybrid working plans and do not have a good justification for doing so. Suncorp’s spokeswoman insisted that this was not why the plans had been included in the scorecards.

“That’s like docking people’s pay if they don’t use a blue pen instead of a black pen. Does it matter if you use blue or black pens if the output is the same?” Mr Farquhar asked. Ms Tucker said it sent a clear signal to all employees that the company wanted people to visit the office more frequently and promoted fairness across workplaces where working from home was not an option for everyone. But she also said it was “not without its drawbacks”.
