THE semiconductor and electronics industry is prodding the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to improve courses that would help meet the industry’s needs as the country plays catch-up with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Lachica revealed that Seipi submitted recommendations to improve the curriculum to CHED 12 years ago, specifically adding eight engineering subjects and four in Applied Sciences but noted that the industry group’s request is still “in the waiting Ched.” In terms of the industry-led initiatives, however, the Seipi chief shared that the industry group has been working with the Department of Trade and Industry to improve the skills and reskill incoming and existing workforce to meet the demands of the manufacturing sector in the Philippines.

“The members of the workforce will be trained in both scientific and technology-based knowledge and advanced cognitive skills. Depending on their job, they may be taught information on automated equipment, utilizing big data and AI or artificial intelligence,” the Unilab website noted.
