The City of Greater Sudbury has signed a memorandum of understanding with mining company Wyloo to build a facility that would process nickel for electric vehicle batteries.Wyloo CEO Kristan Straub says the Eagle's Nest project in northwestern Ontario will supply about 15,000 tons of nickel per year into their proposed processing facility in Sudbury.
The proposed facility would process nickel from Wyloo's Eagle's Nest mine in northern Ontario's Ring of Fire region. The mine is set to start production in 2027. "We're also proposing to take and process other third party feeds. They can be concentrates, recycled materials from battery recycles that will happen through the electric vehicle chain."In addition to the City of Greater Sudbury, Straub said both Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Wahnapitae First Nation are on board as partners.
In a press release Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre said Sudbury has the "land, the talent and the resources" needed for the future of mining and EV technology.
