A Perry County business has been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor after the owner allegedly let his sons work on the rooftop of a Mechanicsburg apartment.

A Perry County business has been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor after the owner allegedly let his sons work on the rooftop of a Mechanicsburg apartment in June.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched an investigation into S&L Roofing, Gutters and Siding LLC after the PA Department of Labor and Industry reported that the owner had allowed his sons, ages 12 and 14, to work on the roofs without any fall protection. “Allowing children to perform roofing work is illegal and permitting them to do so without fall protection makes this case even more disturbing,” said OSHA Area Director Kevin T. Chambers, according to a. “Falls from heights kill hundreds of workers each year and leave many more with permanent and often disabling injuries. Once again, S&L Roofing, Gutters and Siding is ignoring mandatory federal regulations and putting people – this time his own children – in danger.

In addition to exposing the kids to high heights, the children were also "exposed to injuries while using an incorrectly set extension ladder and pneumatic nail guns in violation of federal regulations," OSHA found. As a result of the investigation, S&L Roofing, Gutters and Siding LLC was cited for five safety violations, racking up $64,759 in proposed penalties.
