Protests

A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, says the Nigerian military has no business issuing a statement on a civil matter. The legal expert said nobody would be intimidated by their threat. The statement comes after the Defence Headquarters warned those mobilising for a nationwide protest that it will not condone anarchy.

DAILY POST reports that some Nigerians are mobilising for a nationwide protest slated for August 1 to August 10, 2024. Tagged #EndBadGovernace, organisers of the protest have lamented about widespread hunger and inflation in the country.

The military, during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, said it uncovered plots by unscrupulous elements to hijack the protest and turn it into a violent one by attacking innocent Nigerians and their businesses. Effiong, a human rights lawyer, in a post on his X handle on Thursday, said soldiers should stay in their barracks and stay out of politics. He said: 'The Nigerian military has no business issuing a statement on a civil matter. 'Nobody will be intimidated by your threat.
