We have reached that point in the political cycle where the parliamentary clock is running down, opinion polls are being taken more seriously, and various efforts are underway to define the ground on which the election will be fought.

Labor has settled on industrial relations as the soft underbelly to target Peter Dutton and the conservatives as an election looms.

At one point, the prime minister even appeared to threaten an early double dissolution election if the Senate wouldn't play ball. It was a threat no one took seriously. Certainly not ministers who privately noted a double dissolution would only lead to an even more unwieldy upper house. On Sunday, Shadow Finance Minister Jane Hume confirmed the Coalition in government would also review the "Same Job, Same Pay" laws for labour hire workers.

Part of Peter Dutton's pitch has involved a willingness to take on big business but now he's back in line with the top end of town.Beating up on big business has proven popular. But on IR, Dutton is now back in line with the top end of town.
