The global travel industry is expected to grow in 2025 following a period of recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In South Africa, over 60% of locals surveyed are planning to take more holidays in 2025 compared to 2024. Domestic holidays are at the forefront, with an average of 2.7 planned, followed by two short-haul and 1.8 long-haul trips. The top destinations include South Africa, the USA, Mozambique, France, and Mauritius. Additionally, the use of generative AI software for travel planning is on the rise among South African travelers and holidaymakers worldwide.

“The use of AI in travel planning is also growing rapidly,” the chain says in a statement sent to Hypertext. “An impressive 85% of South African travellers say they are braver on holiday, the highest among all markets surveyed. This trend is particularly strong among younger travellers, with 87% of 18–24-year-olds and 91% of 25–34-year-olds expressing a willingness to try new and exciting things.”

Locals are also considering their wallets even though they are planning to get out more. One of the main factors that would encourage booking a holiday is “getting a special price.” Over 62 percent of respondents keyed this answer.
