Oman has resumed copper exports for the first time in nearly 30 years, following successful shipment of copper concentrates from the Lasail Mine in Sohar on 2 January. The development marks a significant step for the Sultanate's mining sector and aligns with its efforts to diversify the country's oil-based economy and promote sustainability. The Lasail Mine, located in Block 11B in Sohar, is operated by Oman Mining Company, a subsidiary of Minerals Development Oman (MDO).
The mine produces copper concentrates with purity levels of 18% to 22% and an annual output averaging 500,000 tonnes of ore. Plans are underway to commence operations at the Al-Baydha Mine in Liwa by 2025–2026, with the two sites collectively holding an estimated 2.78 million tonnes of copper ore. Economic transitionMDO has outlined a phased redevelopment approach over the next four to five years, with ongoing exploration aimed at increasing reserves and ensuring sustainable production. The resumption is part of the Gulf country's ongoing strategy to position itself as a key player in the global copper market. Demand for the metal is expected to grow due to its role in renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles. Mattar bin Salim Al Badi, MDO's newly inaugurated chief executive, highlighted the sector's progress in reopening dormant mines and enhancing their value, stating that these efforts contribute to economic and social development. Al Badi also expressed optimism about future projects, including the Mazoon Copper Project, which aims to be Oman's largest integrated copper production initiative.
