Once hailed as a force for good, social media is fast becoming a vehicle for discord, threatening our liberty, civility and democracy. While the moguls of the hi-tech giants such as Twitter and Facebook grow fabulously rich through their monopolistic grip on the net, their products are spreading poison through our society. At their worst, parts of the virtual media are a toxic swamp of extremism, abuse and intolerance.
