Members of the FFAW protested at Confederation Building on March 28. One of their demands was for the provincial government to allow buyers from other provinces to purchase crab from Newfoundland and Labrador harvesters. - Keith GosseKeith Sullivan announced Thursday, Dec. 1, he is stepping down as president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers , but was vague on the reasons why.
Sullivan is the son of a fish harvester, Lloyd Sullivan of Calvert. Keith Sullivan began working at the FFAW 10 years before being elected president. As the FFAW membership begins to come to terms with Sullivan’s decision to resign, the question now turns to, who will lead?Since the union represents sectors other than the inshore fishery, the leader could come from the offshore fishery, seafood processing, brewing or offshore oil industry membership.
“He was a great president and he was leading us in the fishery, so it definitely was a surprise and shock. But whatever road takes now I wish him luck for the future,” he said. “It’s the greatest privilege to work with the people here and all the workers in our union. It’s been incredible and I feel very lucky to have done it,” he said. “I think, probably the most privileged position in this province. That’s my belief.
After an unsuccessful attempt to form a new union for fish harvesters, Cleary formed the association for owners of fishing enterprises in 2021.
