Government says the NHI will make healthcare provision more affordable especially for the poor.

According to Motsoaledi, the NHI will also ensure that every South African receives quality health treatment.

His remarks come after he addressed medical students at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Ga-Rankuwa, north-west of Pretoria. The NHI bill was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in May this year – just before the 2024 national and provincial elections.Motsoaledi dismissed concerns that there is no money to fund NHI.

“People keep on saying there is no money. There is money but the issue is on how it is distributed. 51% of that money goes to only 15% of that population and the remaining 49% must be shared by a whooping 80% of the population. This is gross inequality. Those people who say there is no money, why don’t they talk about inequality?” adds the minister.Motsoaledi says there is rampant corruption in the private medical aid schemes amounting to R28-billion.

Dr Motsoaledi says concerted efforts must be made to curb corruption in both the public and the private healthcare sectors.
