Councilmembers with the City of Harrisburg are publicly criticizing the process that City officials went through to declare a state of emergency for the Broad Street Market nearly a month ago. That declaration was made after authorities discovered rats in the burnt down brick building, citing that the infestation caused a public health concern.
City councilmembers on Monday sent out a letter, asking for the mayor to answer multiple questions that they stated were not accurately answered in the process of issuing the declaration: Some of those questions in the statement included inquiries such as why city council had no time to assemble and vote on the recommended contractors, who was notified of the emergency, what were the specific health threat to the community, and when administration was first made aware of the rats:
We believe it is in the best interest of the community for this situation to be addressed with full transparency. As elected representatives of the people of Harrisburg, it is our duty to ensure that proper procedures are followed, especially in situations involving public safety and health.I find it disheartening that the same three members of Council who voted against starting work on the market in May, are continuing to do what they can to delay construction.
