President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed an amended proclamation authorising the Special Investigation Unit to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration at the University of Fort Hare in the Eastern Cape.

SIU Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says amongst the areas that will be investigated include the registration and awarding of degrees by non-eligible persons and serious maladministration and malpractices. “Under Fort Hare, the amendments are as follows Proclamation 194 of 2024 amends Proclamation R184 of 2022 within the University of Fort Hare. The amendment results in the SIU investigation revealing that the SIU needs to investigate further areas of existing proclamations where it did not cover certain things. The SIU requested the amendment in terms of time and focus area.”It is alleged that Mabuyane was admitted to a Master’s program despite not having an honour’s degree.
