A man holds a sign as activists mark the start of Climate Week in New York during a demonstration calling for the U.S. government to take action on climate change and reject the use of fossil fuels in New York City, New York, US, September 17, 2023.
The organisation’s senior policy analyst, Brandon Wu, says the global north countries are strategically refusing to commit to providing necessary funds for mitigating the effects of climate change.Wu addressed the media at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. “Developed countries are trying to make it complicated. It’s an intentional strategy so that they can distract us from the fact that they failed to honour their finance obligations for decades now. And had they provided the money they themselves had promised, these negotiations would have been much easier from all negotiating tracks.
It’s the poorest communities, who have done so little to cause climate change, who are paying for it with their lost livelihoods, lands and lives.Meanwhile, as climate finance continues to be a thorny issue, environmental activists are calling on developed nations to contribute more than 1.5 trillion dollars to fight the effects of climate change.Fillipino activist Lidy Nacpil has appealed to governments to ensure that COP29 delivers on promises to make funds available.
“This money is not just about the needs and interests of the people from the global south. We are here to reiterate our plea for our governments both in the north and in the south to stand up for our rights. Reducing carbon emissions to zero by 2050 will not succeed unless everyone does it. We will not be able to do it without that climate finance.”
