After a lengthy hiatus, the beloved Mayor’s Craft Market is set to make a vibrant comeback at the Cape Town Civic Centre next week. From Wednesday, 27 November to Friday, 29 November 2024, the concourse level of the Civic Centre will once again be filled with locally handmade and pre-packaged goods, showcasing the city’s rich creative talent. The market, launched in September 2010, has long been a cornerstone of the Mayor’s Skills Development and Poverty Alleviation Programme.
It provides registered vendors, particularly from disadvantaged communities, a platform to connect with customers and earn income, all without any cost to participate. ‘This market is part of the Mayor’s Skills Development and Poverty Alleviation Programme, and it offers registered vendors a free opportunity to sell their goods to City staff as well as members of the public visiting the Civic Centre. The market’s impact on local livelihoods, since its first run in September 2010, has been profound,’ said Alderman Theresa Uys, mayoral committee member for Corporate Services. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis emphasised the significant role the market plays in uplifting local artisans and fostering economic growth. ‘Many participating crafters, especially those from disadvantaged communities, have relied on the market as a significant source of income to support their families and build small businesses. Staff members also value the opportunity to connect with and support local artisans,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis. ‘The support over the years has been greatly appreciated, and we will continue to support our local traders.’ Aligned with the City’s vision of ‘A City of Hope for All,’ the Mayor’s Craft Market not only drives economic opportunity but also strengthens social cohesion by bringing communities together. Over 40 traders are set to participate in the three-day event, offering a variety of handcrafted and pre-packaged item
