Alaskans react to judges halt of massive proposed merger between Kroger, Albertsons grocery companies

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Reaction to a massive grocery merger between the parent companies of Carrs-Safeway and Fred Meyer was mostly positive Tuesday in the hours after the news broke.earlier this year, asking Nelson to block the $24.6 billion deal until an in-house administrative judge at the FTC could consider the merger’s implications.Sen. Bill Wielechowski, a state senator who represents much of east Anchorage, said Tuesday that the ruling was “great news for Alaskans.

“This has been a huge concern for a long time,” Wielechowski said. “We don’t have a lot of grocery stores in Alaska, particularly in some of the smaller communities, it’s a real concern that this was going to take grocery stores out of our communities and drive up the cost of products throughout the state.”

Later Tuesday, Judge Marshall Ferguson in Seattle issued a permanent injunction barring the merger in Washington after concluding it would lessen competition in the state. Kroger and Albertsons said Tuesday they are disappointed in the decisions and are reviewing their options.
