Conventional economic wisdom suggests a rate cut will cause stocks to rise, but conventional wisdom hasn’t reflected reality for the last 20 years.

The most recent example came in September 2007, when the Fed announced a 50 basis point cut from 5.25% to 4.75%. The S&P 500 peaked three weeks later before diving into the Great Recession—the rate cut would have been a perfect time to get out of the market, not get in. It was a similar story when the Fed cut rates on Jan. 3, 2001 for the first time since 1998. The dot-com bubble was just beginning to burst, and ten more cuts in 2001 couldn’t stop the bleeding.

The president frequently takes personal credit for the strength of the stock market during his administration, though he believes the Fed has stood in its way to rise even higher. But the stock market’s strength this year could also work against it leading into the Fed’s announcement.on July 10 that the Fed would cut rates due to “uncertainties around trade tensions and concerns about the strength of the global economy.

gtconway3d Be careful what you ask for!!!!

gtconway3d The the question is, will the stock market crash 'three weeks' after Wednesday, or after a Democrat is elected in November 2020. In either case, Trump will blame the Democrats.

Why is one of your writers posting things like this?

Is this a valid comparison? Back then we were headed towards a financial collapse because of housing crisis.

gtconway3d Trump, who always got free money from his dad to cover his six bankruptcies, wants Fed to be like his dad, give free money to cover the harm his tariffs are doing to the economy and will blame caring for the poor for the huge debt incurred to give wealthy/corporations tax cuts

gtconway3d Well, duh! Trump wanted it oh so badly (even hinting he’d fire the Fed Chairman if he didn’t deliver). Of course it’ll cause a mess. ETTD

gtconway3d No kidding

gtconway3d LMAO

gtconway3d Buy the rumor, sell the news.
