5 mistakes job seekers make that immediately turn off recruiters that try to 'poach' them for a role (by marykearl)

Cahill, who created his company after 10 years of consulting for recruiters, said that while it may seem like a mysterious process, it's really simple. Candidates and recruiters have the same goal: "You want the job and we want you to get it," he said.

"That indicates the candidate is not truly interested in making a career move, but might be if the increase is huge," McGee explained. To recruiters this spells trouble because, in McGee's experience, most candidates never accept the position when offered, and instead use the offer as leverage for a counteroffer with their current employer.

Just because you may have bypassed the traditional job application process by getting directly connected to a recruiter doesn't mean you don't have to do any work. If you've been provided information about the role and company, you should do your research so you're prepared for the interview. "In some instances, there are candidates who are creating mobile apps in the evenings after their kids go to bed, which shows me that they have the right technical skills, as well as the passion and problem-solving behaviors we look for," said Hoffman. "In other instances, we see candidates who have taken a break in their careers for various reasons, and learned new skill sets during that time. These are all great things to bring up in an interview.
