The decision to hand the COVIDSafe data storage contract to US company Amazon was a “disgusting, disgraceful” move, according to Crossbench Senator Rex Patrick. Amazon was awarded the contract to keep data collected from the COVIDSafe app on its servers but Mr Patrick insisted the contract should have been awarded domestically.

The South Australian Senator told Sky News he wrote to Finance Minister Mathias Cormann urging him to invoke powers that would give extra weighting to “procurement” that benefits Australian companies. "I was actually quite disgusted by the government in their handing of the COVIDSafe data cloud storage contract to a US company when we have the expertise in this country,” he said. "We want to be investing in and supporting those sorts of capabilities in Australia.

Senator_Patrick This is NOT keeping jobs in Australia. This is NOT creating jobs for Australians. Incredible hypocrisy of the Federal Government. All this grandstanding about keeping jobs and businesses in Australia and their first large initiative is to outsource to a big US IT company.
