American, Delta, and United all announced their policies on Thursday, following JetBlue — which announced its requirement on Wednesday — and Frontier, which announced its policy earlier on Thursday. Alaska Airlines announced a similar policy on Friday. United's mask protocol, which also takes effect May 4, requires masks to be worn on board aircraft, while Frontier's policy goes into effect May 8. Alaska's policy begins May 11.

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, said she was pleased with the airlines' decisions, but called on the federal government to enact a formal requirement for passenger masks.
