Opinion | The pandemic is wrecking the typical 9-to-5 workday. Finally.. By Carrie Rich of the GlobalGoodFund

An operator wearing a protective face mask works in a call centre for contact tracing, May 8, 2020 in Brussels, Belgium. The novel coronavirus and the crisis surrounding it have pointed out the inefficiencies of the normal 9-to-5 work.

Americans across the country were already rethinking the typical workweek. The public health crisis boosted the number of organizations that are seriously considering altering their schedules and workplace culture. showed that 82% percent of employed Americans would be somewhat or very willing to work more hours over four days instead of working fewer over five. Further, 71% percent of those employees believe the switch would make them more productive at work.

We give our employees the liberty of working as little as necessary to complete the job, and we encourage them to do so. Additionally, by all working remotely, we don't make our employees choose between priorities like work and personal lives. It was initially difficult to gain support for the idea of flexible working, but outcomes proved our theory. We saw our employees produce even more impressive results when they were given flexibility, and they were happier while doing so. Further, we were able to retain exceptional employees when they moved across the country or world.

Commute time was instead spent digging for new funding opportunities and in-person meetings became video conference meetings. In the first three months of our colleague's entirely virtual role focused on strategic partnerships, she closed $300,000 in new relationships. Did I mention that she works 4 days per week and pre-COVID picked up her kids from school?
