The alcohol industry in Australia is arguing that proposed changes to labelling would cost too much, but a prominent medical researcher says this argument is 'an absolute furphy'.

One of Australia's most renowned medical researchers has thrown her support behind more prominent alcohol warning labels for pregnant women, saying arguments from the industry it will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to implement are a "furphy".

Medical expert and former Australian of the Year Professor Fiona Stanley is urging the ministers to adopt the proposal put forward by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand . "It's been tested, it's been shown that this kind of label — 90 per cent of women will take notice of, whereas the other labels, which are black and hardly can be seen, hardly any women take notice of, or very much lower percentages."

"It does effect them more, because it's a bigger cost per bottle and they have more difficulty selling their product and the margins issue makes it more problematic for them," Tony Battaglene, chief executive of Australian Grape and Wine, said.

Also should be a message to potential fathers

Again industry stuffed up by minority interest groups....

This bullshit will cost the industry $400M in bottle printing... money better spent on educating pregnant women before they have their hands on the bottle... Do you think a 3 colour label will work better than 1 colour ? Does anyone ever look at these stupid labels?

A responsible, ethical alcohol company would be campaigning for these changes to be implemented. The dangers of drinking while pregnant are well documented, and an alcohol company that thinks these dangers are frivolous will lose my custom for life.

Good. Be afraid.. times are a changing!😠

My only question is why are pregnant women drinking Why not go for the trifecta Don't drink Don't smoke or vapour (ecigs) Don't do drugs I thought it was a given... everyone knew

As if changing the label is going to change people's habits. I saw a pregnant lady the other, happily smoking and drinking. I asked are you sure you should be doing that? He reply, yeah it will be OK what can you do?

There are no warnings on the damage caused by sugar on any products, despite it being both addictive and bad for us.

Can we do away with gambling advertising too

Lobbyists including their fees in that blowout estimate? The warning is already on the bottle but all that’s wanted is to make it standout.

The pregnancy health warning developed by FSANZnews after extensive consultation is on left. The warning preferred by alcohol lobby is on right. This is a choice between a VisibleHealthWarning & an invisible one. The health & wellbeing of our children & families must come 1st.

I like the no fat chicks logo

tincan01 SOLUTION: Dear alcohol industry.....add 10 cents to your pricing. Jeez, is it that hard? Or costly? ANSWER: No! LamestExcuseEver

Ban industry lobbyist's corrupting politics...

The grog companies can get some ideas from big tobacco on how to suppress such control. Can’t wait for the result. Bottle shops currently look like Xmas year round.

Every one knows.

No sure alcohol companies get that they are not as important as babies.

This tweet feels like the most obvious statement that could be made.

Explains all the LWNJ’s out there. Better late than never I suppose.

So what if it costs them millions to implement, it will save billions in avoided healthcare costs and lost productivity.

Yay! A label will fix it!!

becoz the cigarette labels made a difference 😂 🙄

While we’re at it, how are tobacco products still legal?

World of difference between the one the evidence shows they should have, and the one they’re trying to get away with. They need to examine their consciences.
