White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany speaks during a press briefing at the White House, Friday, May 1, 2020, in Washington.White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday that President Trump wants US schools to be "open and full" and that "the science should not stand in the way of this."
The Trump administration's push to reopen schools come as states across the country report new surges in coronavirus infections and hospitalizations. "The president has said unmistakably that he wants schools to open," McEnany replied. "I was just in the Oval talking to him about that, and when he says open, he means open and full, kids being able to attend each and every day at their school."
However, many public-health officials have cautioned against reopening schools because there hasn't yet been enough research into how children react to the novel coronavirus, which causes a disease known as COVID-19. They also warn that reopening schools could pose a particularly high risk of infection given that schools are indoor spaces that are often poorly-ventilated and feature hundreds of people talking and interacting.
