Advocates are fighting to remove financial barriers to business licensing and for policies like allocating cannabis tax revenue to communities most affected by the drug war. Dasheeda Dawson, current cannabis program supervisor for Portland, Oregon's Office of Community and Civil Life, is encouraged by the uptick in diverse representation in cannabis leadership roles on the state level.While many in the cannabis space are taking steps to do their part, sources told Business Insider that more could be done on the federal, state, and industry levels to ensure that every person has an opportunity to succeed as an owner or employee.

The renewed support for racial and social justice in America calls for a significant uptick in inclusion efforts. In cannabis, a pivotal component to the effort is creating equitable access for Black communities and others most impacted by theThe inauguration of the Biden/Harris ticket in 2021 could be the latest boost of support for industry equality. The duo had frequently touted President-elect Biden's federal decriminalization platform during campaigning.

"The price people of color have paid in the cannabis industry is far greater than any other sector in the history of our nation," said Aiden Rafii, chief operating officer of cannabis distributor"They've kneecapped people of color from building generational wealth from cannabis by imprisoning them, preventing them from truly being able to establish a strong financial footing," Rafii added.
