Dark, dark year-end for mining industry

Many others have been left with more questions than answers about how their loved ones lost their lives at work.

The Mineral Council of SA said that, by Monday, 72 fatalities had already been registered at mining operations nationally since the beginning of the year. This occurred a day after a contract worker was killed at the same company’s shaft 16, also in Rustenburg. Four lives were also lost in two separate accidents at the Sibanye-Stillwater mining operation.

“The impact of every single fatality is very well understood. As CEOs, we’re called on to show leadership. We have the influence and the authority to stop this. We don’t want to be known as an industry in which people come to work and die.” “The industry’s stakeholders have committed to urgently addressing the unacceptable situation. To achieve [the transformation of] health and safety in the mining sector, stakeholders from the department of mineral resources and energy, the MCSA, organised labour, suppliers’ organisations, professional associations, the Mine Health and Safety Council and the Mining Qualifications Authority have committed to taking full accountability in addressing the challenges besetting the mining sector.

While it is agreed that all fatalities are unwanted, it would be better if the mining industry statistic was displayed in terms of the fatality rate per hours worked, and then compared to other industries and activities. A pure number can lead to mistaken priorities.
