A multinational food company, Danone, has predicted a halt to production in its Spanish plants as a result of blockades mounted by truck drivers protesting rising fuel prices.

Transportation of milk from farmers to Danone’s production plants and that of finished products to consumers were reported to have been badly affected by the protests.

The government in Madrid had earlier pledged €500 million on Monday to fund a cut in the price of diesel, following its meeting with the association of Spanish haulers. However, an online platform, operated largely by smaller haulage companies, had called for blockades and other direct action which began at the start of last week against rising fuel prices.
