The S&P 500 has seen the steepest decline in April since at least 2002, and the technology-laden Nasdaq Composite Index has marked its worst first four months since 1973.

Overall inflation rose 6.6% in March from a year earlier, an acceleration from February, but the move represented a decline when factoring food and energy costs, with a rise of 5.2% last month from a year earlier, according to the government.
