Two years ago clean-energy enthusiasts were right to feel bullish. But now, green power is not just failing to boom. It is going bust

Save time by listening to our audio articles as you multitaskThough Mr Biden’s infrastructure bill offered some help for clean energy, a giant climate bill now seems fantastical. Worse, green power is not just failing to boom. It is going bust. An array of American solar projects have been delayed or cancelled amid a federal probe into tariff evasion by manufacturers of solar panels and modules.

Two years ago clean-energy enthusiasts were right to feel bullish. In the decade to 2020 the levelised cost of electricity—which takes into account investment in equipment, construction, financing and maintenance—had fallen by 69% for onshore wind and 85% for solar projects, according to Lazard, an advisory firm. With renewables technologically mature and economically competitive, utilities and developers planned to pour money into solar and wind.

That problem has now been dwarfed by a bigger one. In March the Commerce Department humoured a request by Auxin Solar, an American manufacturer, to check if Chinese companies were circumventing anti-dumping tariffs. Duties had originally been imposed by Barack Obama, then extended by Mr Trump; Auxin claims that firms are dodging tariffs by making parts in China but assembling modules in their South-East Asian factories.

Please stop predicting your interpretation of American Voters. This is biased and stereotypical journalistic bullshit.

It's stuck because they're not focusing on the only viable option to eliminate fossil fuels from the grid. Nuclear power is the only viable solution.

WTF, amazing journalism, NOT. Economist is going tabloid, down the toilet

Say whatever you want for those Democratic votes.

Control Congress? Not likely. House, maybe.

“Look poised”. Source: none.

By greenery you mean $$$ and they, like you, have enough! We (the average American) are so sick of your BS! Paint it red November!!!!!!!!

Why so hostile?

Otherwise known as a buying opportunity.

Because “clean energy” will never be tolerated by the voters or consumers. It can only be imposed by governmental fiat on an unwilling public

It's like Nuclear energy was always the solution!

Because it sucks, it isn't an 'at current levels' sustainable source.....causing people pain to get to utopia is not the right way....they know there is a better way for them and they will demand it....

Because it DOES NOT WORK!

Clean energy 😂

Oil, gas and coal will probably never be completely replaced by renewables, but great strides are being made by geniuses like elonmusk and others.

I think someone invented a 100mpg carburetor in the 50s or 60s too!

Ok thee world is going to fry. Glad I never had tis, sorry for earths animals though. Any suggestions right wing The Economist'?

The next 30 years are pivotal for the future of the global climate .

Answer: politics.
