KOTA KINABALU: An assistant officer with a government department was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly abusing his power in approving the purchase of food worth RM43,000 from his brother's company.

The civil servant in his 40s was arrested at 10am on Monday at the Sabah MACC headquarters after he turned up to give his statement in connection with the investigations.

According to sources, the suspect was alleged to have appointed his brother's company to supply food for various programmes held by the department between March and October 2019.Sabah MACC director, Datuk S. Karunanithy when contacted, confirmed the arrest."We expect to charge him at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Court soon," he added.

In an unrelated case, the MACC is expected to charge on Tuesday a 33-year-old officer with a federal agency in connection with demanding a RM22,000 bribe from a company to carry out land clearing works. The suspect, who was arrested on Sept 13, is expected to be charged under Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009, for soliciting a bribe at the Special Corruption Court here.
