SYDNEY, N.S. — Patrick Doyle believes the stunning images of the Cape Breton Highlands could easily sub for a faraway land in the Game of Thrones universe.

He also imagines the island’s countless other beautiful backdrops standing in for Ireland or Scotland as part of some magical or period piece in any movie or television production.

Membertou Coun. Graham Marshall, a founding member of the Unama’ki Motion Picture Co-operative: “As someone from Membertou, I want them to hear our voices." CONTRIBUTED - CONTRIBUTED“As someone from Membertou, I want them to hear our voices,” said Membertou Coun. Graham Marshall, a founding member of the co-operative, in a press release.

Glace Bay-Dominion MLA John White has no problem advocating for the vision the co-operative is pitching.“The reality is, that is the truth, and here we have an opportunity for an industry that has endless opportunities and the location actually works for us. You can’t do that with anything else.” Larger co-operative goals include making Nova Scotia a one-stop shop for location shooting from Yarmouth to Unama’ki/Cape Breton, which means ‘taking a hard look at our provincial film incentive program.’

An example of the value of an expanded film industry Doyle cited came in March of 2022 when the Disney Production"Washington Black" shot for only two weeks at the Fortress of Louisbourg. It was originally set to film in Cape Breton for six weeks but the current film incentive did not justify the cost of keeping the crew in Cape Breton for that long.
