An industry veteran says the UK needs to follow the US and EU in helping with the shift to electric cars.

The UK's car sector could disappear unless the government follows the US and EU in helping with the switch to electric, an industry veteran says.

He told the BBC's Today programme that the UK was "managing decline" in its car-making industry, but had a "last opportunity" to boost the sector and jobs in the move to electric vehicles. "You are into a period of either you compete... or you manage the decline of the British industry down to fundamentally next to zero," he said.

The UK government told the BBC officials were engaging with the US administration "to address serious concerns" about the IRA, as well as talking to other countries across the world "who are similarly affected".The latest comments come after Mr Hunt said the UK would not go toe-to-toe with its allies and get involved what he called "some distortive global subsidy race".

A similar strategy is also being tried in both the US and EU for restoring the production of critical microchips from East Asia. A part of plans to cut carbon emissions, the government has said sales of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned in the UK by 2030.

🤔…

Quote: Jeremy Hunt told the Times newspaper that the UK's approach to attract investment would be 'better'. End of quote. Basically, the UK government doesn't really care.

Where's the missing £21billion

Stop this expensive electric car nonsense then, we can't afford them..

Oh yes 🤔“Mr Palmer is now chairman of electric battery firm InoBat” … InoBat another ‘British’ company … NOT … Slovakian if I’m not mistaken😡

Electric car technology still needs to improve. Some models have a range of less than 100 miles if driven in cold weather at motorway speeds. Don't buy one unless you NEVER leave town! 😂

The EU has negotiated a partial opt out of the new US trading restrictions, and as far as I know, the new Electro Mini will be built in China not the UK. The UK cannot compete with the US and EU im offering subsidies.

You just thought that you will create unreliable junk for ever and ever ?

It’s alright patrick minford is coming to help

You've been pushing everything that is destroying it you grade A melts

Build better

Having to pay on average 40k for an electric car is the problem

To safeguard the UK automobile industry, join the EU... Nigel Farage's irony

Only spending £50000 on an electric car will solve this, sign here 😃 Also kids, take out a 50 yr old mortage so it keeps the financial companies happy. You can also help climate change, but only if you spend your money on our products and work until 75.

Warning home grown local food, U.K. farming under threat, which support would you do first? What do you need each day and can’t live without? Not just gov it’s public buying habits accepting supermarkets doubling profits when food bank needs have quadrupled

The government shouldn't ever steal our money to give to private businesses.

Thought it was up 13.1%

Netzero at work

A trade war started by the USA, now countered by the EU, and all funded by taxpayers. This is crazy.

They might have to reduce the price of cars if they are that much at threat! 🤣🤣👍👍

The UK car industry is thriving. Don't believe the government led .
