Amid the initial reaction to the announcement, it appeared that players on both sides of the divide were caught by surprise, which is itself a departure from recent months in which PGA Tour loyalists like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy took leading roles in reshaping some of the ways in which that tour does business.

The surprise announcement of the merger ends litigation between the PGA Tour and LIV, and comes with the Saudi league in its second season. LIV’s great success in its two seasons was in drawing a lot of attention to the controversy about LIV, and in making a number of golf pros enormously wealthy, but the problem with inventing a new tour was always going to be trying to make people care about it.
