Farmers markets are important community hubs. They bring together city and country, past and present, races, ethnicities and classes. The market on the square consisted of two long open-air sheds separated by Market Street that had served Harrisburg since 1790. The sheds had become a “nuisance” and an obstruction to increasing traffic in the growing city.
The 1951 fire, which originated in a kitchen, damaged the second floor but left the market on the first floor untouched. The building never recovered. Five Chestnut Street vendors moved to the Broad Street Market, and at least 30 set up shop at the West Shore Farmers Market, The Evening News reported.West Shore Farmers Market
