In his teens, Tim Knowles washed cars for a company in Botany Bay - today, he's behind a multi-million pound plan to redevelop the iconic mill

When Tim Knowles left school at 16, he was unable to read or write. Within five years, he'd sold his business for £2m.

Gone is Puddletown Pirates which used to sit next to the mill. In its place, a range of commercial, manufacturing, industrial and retail units are on their way in the form of Botany Bay Business Park.Tim told LancsLive he expects to create that thousands through the development, which involves tens of millions of pounds in construction costs alone.

“I was quite clever in that I started cleaning cars, but we also delivered a franchise, a model on how to clean cars and valet and the rest of it. I bought my first building for £6,250 and at that stage, very early, I sold all the franchises for a couple of million of pounds and kept all the properties.

He said: “Thankfully I was still frightened because fear keeps you worried but the model was fairly straightforward. At that time, I developed a concept called Knowles Way. Explaining his journey to buying the mill, he said: “We’d just bought Bygone Times. It had gone bust with the previous people but not got to where it is today. I realised when you look at Bygone Times, you’ve got loads of different stall holders who sell anything from bric-a-brac to antiques to even a bit of nostalgia tat so that was great.

“I grew up in Leyland but Chorley adopted me from a very young age. I got up at five, walked to the bus, got the bus to Chorley so that’s where I got my first valeting garage.
