THE Department of Migrant Workers yesterday welcomed the passage of the Magna Carta of Seafarers in the Senate saying it brings the country closer to setting a"significant industry benchmark".

"We will continue working with our policymakers in crafting this key piece of legislation, which sets a significant industry benchmark that promotes a safer, more equitable, and seafarer-centric maritime sector,” Cacdac said. In particular, the DMW OIC noted how the bill has a seafarer-centric approach, wherein the new legislation places Filipino seafarers at the forefront, with a focus on their rights, safety, and well-being while working at sea.

Cacdac said they are also looking forward to having institutionalized mental health support provisions that allow seafarers to have access to mental health services and support during their maritime journeys.
