The Town of Whitby and Feed the Need in Durham (FTND) are teaming up to open a new market-style food bank. It starts running Thursday at Iroquois Park Sports

The Town of Whitby and Feed the Need in Durham are teaming up to open a new market-style food bank. Those who use it will be able to have a “shopping style” experience instead of just getting a pre-selected food hamper. The town says it will help those in need select foods that best suit their families and needs and will also allow them to access more fresh and frozen foods.

There will be 100 spots open per week. If all of the spots are filled, pre-packaged food bags will be offered at the market during its hours of operation. Another way you can help is by dropping off non-perishable food donations. They are being accepted at Iroquois during facility operating hours or at the FTND warehouse at 371A Marwood Drive in Oshawa Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A list of the most-needed items can be found

A recent report found 15 per cent of families in Durham are food insecure, which means they either worry about running out of food, settle for lower quality food or miss meals altogether.
