Mussel farmers say their local shellfish is a superfood and among the best in the world, but they need more space to help their crops grow.

They sow crops over vast areas and harvest when the size and season is right. But these farmers work the sea and not the soil, feeding Australia’s growing appetite for fresh and locally grown mussels.

He said local mussels compared “very favourably” to those regarded as the best internationally, including the shellfish grown in Spain and France.“They can be as good, if not better, than mussels anywhere in the world.” Harris grows his mussels roughly a kilometre from the shore. He said Victoria’s mussel industry was tiny by international standards.

“Economically, it could drive a boon for the state. It would provide employment through sustainable means,” he said.
