Market Factors: The three most successful investing themes of the past 18 months still have legs

Today we’ll outline Morgan Stanley’s view that the top-performing equity market strategies over the past 18 months will continue to outdistance broad indices, look at the characteristics that make an honest market strategist, and express my annoyance with academic economics.and I’m very glad I did.

Mr. Stanley included a list of 50 stocks with exposure to the biggest number of the 36 broad market themes he coversThis list has outperformed the S&P 500 by a factor of four over the past decade on a market cap-weighted basis. Rules two and three summarize why I hate single line charts. Virtually every chart I publish will feature an asset price and a market driver, showing a potential connection that will affect investor portfolios. Industrial metal prices, for example, are highly correlated to global manufacturing activity as measured by the J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI index.

The analysis found that any academic economist aspiring to any major award has to spend half of their career at one of eight universities – Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, M.I.T., Chicago, Columbia or Berkeley. No one else has won an award.
