In July, the organisation wrote to the President urging him to declare this a state of emergency.

The Save South Africa civic movement has accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of inaction with regards to the death of children over suspected contaminated food.

Six children from Naledi in Soweto died last month after being exposed to a pesticide containing a harmful organophosphate. However, it emerged that the pesticide was not in the packet of chips found in one of the children’s pockets. “As Save SA, we are now worried at the conduct of the President. We are not here to disrespect Mr Ramaphosa as the President but we are concerned at his lack of action attitude especially when children are dying in numbers while others remain hospitalised. As the movement, we are of the view that the government is scared to temper with other countries but rather sacrifice innocent children in order to maintain relations,” says Save South Africa’s Tebogo Mashilompane.

Meanwhile, earlier this week multiple spaza shops were found to be non-compliant with City of Ekurhuleni by-laws at the Birch Acres township in Kempton Park on Gauteng’s East Rand. This raid was part of efforts to reduce the risk of food borne illnesses and fatalities by promoting safe food-handling behaviour.
