The “business Liberal,” sometimes called a blue Liberal, used to be found with relative ease in Ottawa. Over the past decade, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has more or less driven that species into extinction. Canadian business, the economy and public finances have suffered as a result. This is the legacy of Mr. Trudeau, who said on MondayIn the past, business-conscious Liberal ministers could be counted on to channel the interests and views of companies and the business community into often left-leaning cabinets and a civil service with little first-hand experience in the private sector. These people understood the fundamental importance of business performance to the economic health of the country, jobs for Canadians, and therefore ultimately the political fortunes of the government. Names from the past such as Paul Martin, John Manley, Jim Peterson and Doug Young exemplify the credo. Most tended to be either businesspeople or lawyers. The blue Liberal cared about economic, budgetary, tax, trade and regulatory matters, and the effect these had on business. While they were usually the minority in Liberal cabinets, they were a powerful minority whose views were taken seriously even when they failed to prevail. And sometimes they did prevail. It was the business voices in then-prime minister Jean Chrétien’s cabinet, for example, that drove the effort to seriously tackle the deficit and debt crisis that afflicted Ottawa in the mid-1990
