Government has been urged to do more to improve the lives of those who’ve been left destitute following the deaths of their husbands and fathers in the 2012 Marikana tragedy.
That was the overwhelming sentiment following the screening of a documentary based on the events of August 16, 2012, when 34 striking mine workers were shot and killed by police. It is the story of two mothers, Primrose Sonti and Thumeka Magwangqana, who work tirelessly for change.Sonti who is now a parliamentarian says watching the documentary traumatises her.
“It takes me back, even now I’m not right. I am always traumatised more especially at this age. When I see that documentary, I just remember those bad things. When I watch that documentary it looks like it happened yesterday,” adds Sonti.
