TAGAYTAY CITY -- The Department of Finance said on Friday no formal proposal for a tax increase on salty food products has been filed yet.

Any proposal seeking to impose additional duties on salty and unhealthy food items would need to undergo scrutiny, Finance Assistance Secretary Tony Lambino told reporters.

“Nabanggit lang kasi 'yan in a press conference. I think it was just in passing kaso na-pick up kaya naging storya. But the truth is, wala pa pong proposal. Pinag-aaralan pa po," Lambino said. The Department of Health earlier said it was studying the possibility of taxing salty foods to curb diseases related to salt consumption.

The DOF is currently pushing for higher duties on spirits and tobacco products to help fund universal health care.
