Many owners blame black market haircuts on lower demand compared to last year

Barbers across Ireland are preparing to open their doors on Monday, with many across the country experiencing a high demand for appointments since the announcement was made.

Hugh McAllister is a co-founder of the Grafton Barber and says that staff are “raring” to get back to cutting hair across their 47 shops.“They’ve been doing friends and family’s hair, but it’s not the same as getting back into the barbers,” he says. “Everybody understands now. At the start when people were coming in without a mask, we’d refuse them.

While the Grafton Barber opened at midnight to welcome clients after the last lockdown was lifted, the lack of the same momentum this time around means they’ll keep to regular scheduling in the first weeks. “People will do what they do, they’ll find a way,” he added. “This time around, people just said, ‘not a chance’.”He says social media has been a huge part of it, with people advertising haircuts over lockdown.
