One year ago, Ireland stood at the exit of a traumatic 2020 and in the doorway of a more hopeful 2021, with the arrival of Covid-19 vaccines promising an end to the pandemic. Instead, 2021 turned out to be a hard political lesson in the unpredictability of pandemics, as Covid-19 proved itself capable of resurging to dangerous levels, even as vaccine rates in the adult population eventually exceeded 90 per cent.
