The KwaZulu-Natal government is considering prohibiting people from building houses near river banks in future.

A general view of flood damaged homes in KwaNdengezi, Durban, South Africa, April 12, 2022.

Premier Sihle Zikalala says most of the people affected by recent floods had built their homes near river banks.Zikalala says in future, municipalities need to be stricter in ensuring that no one builds in high-risk areas.“The case of persons who have built houses along the river banks will receive priority attention because mostly these are people that get affected when ever there are floods. A number of homes along these river banks were affected.

“We are in control of the situation through the Department of Health we have completed 243 postmortems and are left with 114 more to complete. We have mobilised additional resources including seven doctors to ensure that the postmortems are completed speedily in order to avoid congestion and to enable those who are grieving to bury their loved ones. Our officials are constantly monitoring the situation and sending bodies to those facilities that do have space,” says the Premier.

I think 🤔 many provinces got the places where it's are in geographical disastrous. It's time to be secured as a whole...this disaster is a magnitude scale

It's actually ellegal to build there...but yall dnt listen

Sadly that is a very old story What do you do when there is nowhere else to go

Surely this was going to be prevented if our government fulfill the promise of building the houses

It’s actually a by law that’s been on the books for probably 50-100 years. That you are so useless should be addressed.

Puh-lease. Total disregard for national laws or bylaws by most people in this country. How will it be enforced? Lack of personnel, resources, and corruption at the highest level.

So, they had no regulations or restrictions related to flood lines, or maybe they had no enforcement of those laws? Whatever the case is, developing a system that monitors, evaluates, enforces and helps people build safer should be Thier first concern.

In future is it on which date?

CONSIDERING

The rediscovery of Floodlines and lightning rods in 21st century Africa

Stupid government that should be Mandatory and be enforced. Mxm useless MYANC

How about the building without a plan?

But that's what was supposed to be practiced long before. Why does it have to take 500 deaths for it to be considered

These clowns thou, that is what every competent government does.

Take eff to court to stop encouraging people to occupy land in dangerous places

We don’t have electricity in Umlazi F since Friday noon…our food is getting spoiled no update is given whatsoever eThekwiniM no Easter for us PresidencyZA MYANC

It's called 'town planning'. Government should google it.

And where should they build because all the land is reserved for the pink Nozez?

It has been like that for many years, only leadership is lacking from ANC government, they are controlled by votes hence they don't stop people from building on land not suitable for settlement just like in wetlands people build.

hlubizer Which Einstein thought this was a good idea to begin with? 🤔

Where was Human Settlements department to advise people though? That's a good idea, people should also think for themselves.

Even emakhaya you find people abakhe imizi onqenqemeni lomfula. If I ask them bathi basondezela amanzi. Govt must give people Land. And improve service delivery. Under leadership of Zikalala there is no service delivery

So they never need building inspectors. Govt has allowed this and the outcome is very sad.

Imagine trying to implement the SPLUMA in rural areas 🤣 - laughs aside that is a dangerous job because 'ngeke nitshelwe umasipala ngomhlaba/umuzi wenu' and ninezibhamu nina

This could be a legacy of apartheid though

It is standard practice, shouldn't of been approved long time ago. Proper land surveying was not done... In fact maybe a commission must be done,

Considering Nooooo MAKE IT LAW ALREADY ever heard of expression 'history repeats itself' The recent KZN floods must be avoided at all costs.

It comes with expropriation of land to vacate the people living near river banks

🤣🤣🤣🤣

😹😹😹😹

Shouldn’t that have been standard from the get go?

Njani, free for all

It's the word CONSIDERING for me. 🙄🙄🙄

Because the floods come back ten times stronger in spaces less that 5 years

Still considering 🤷🏾‍♂️

Where exactly do you think they'll settle if you don't give them a land to stay?... Our gov is a joke.

What do mean? Why?

Now there is a novel, bright and stupendous idea💡💡🔆, and they came up with that all on their own🤔🙊

Words that are used by politicians to escape accountability, 'considers' 'want to' 'going to' 'thinking of' 'will try to' no time frames and no commitment

Considering?! That's a rich thought. What does Build Science say? What do building regulations dictate? This is not a Step Aside 'rule', its consequences are invariably fatal if ignored.

True

Where must we build coz we don't have land that why we are using river banks

What does prohibiting mean 🤔?

400+ people die and then KZN govt 'considers'?
