The Star spoke to experts to break down some of the common terms we’re hearing. Here’s what you need to know:Inflation is when prices go up and the dollar has less purchasing power. It’s measured by the change in price of a fixed basket of goods representing the average consumer’s purchases, says Nicholas Li, assistant economics professor at Toronto Metropolitan University.

The causes of inflation are complex, says Patrick Blanchenay, economics instructor at the University of Toronto. Essentially, it happens whenever the supply of a good drops while demand stays the same, or if demand increases and supply remains stagnant.Because some goods and services are more prone to price changes, the Bank of Canada uses a concept called “core inflation,” which eliminates some of the more volatile elements such as food and energy.

Great prices on Canadian high dividend stocks right now. Big 5 Canadian Banks, Manulife, Enbridge, Bell, Telus etc. From 4% to 6% in dividends paid quarterly forget about the stock price.
